Floorball vs. Hockey from a coach perspective Part 3

Players coming from hockey to floorball are already on a very good level ragarding stickhandling and they are used to body contact, which is increasing in floorball, and the hockey players have also good “foot skills / foot work” from all different skating practices.

If you try to summarize what the two sports floorball and hockey can bring to ech other is;

Floorball to Hockey skills

– Stickhandling skills
– Early game understanding
– Passing skills

Hockey to Floorball skills

– Different type of stickhandling skills and practices
– New dimensions to the game understanding
– Strength and body contact
– Movement into the game

Common skills between floorball and hockey

– Passing
– Tactics
– Technical skills (like stickhandling)
– Game systems and set ups
– Shots

Hockey and floorball in cooperation

I personally and as a coach try to find the benefits between floorball and hockey instead of competition in the early ages. Floorball can develop hockey and hockey can develop floorball, you just need to have an open mind and co-operate and create contacts over these two sport borders, this will benefit both sports and the amount of players!

We can share the players and develop them together to be stars in either floorball or hockey in the end!

Floorball vs. Hockey from a coach perspective Part 2

I’m today fully engaged as a hockey coach in a youth team and “partly” involved in different floorball asignments. What I can see is that floorball players playing hockey are mostly extremely skilled in stickhandling and they are also a head regarding game understanding, WHY? I think it’s simply because you don’t need to focus on learning skating. Therefore in floorball you can focus on stickhandling and game understanding at an earlier stage than in hockey, and as a hockey coach I’m greatly thankfull for that support from floorball to my players in my hockey team.
Hockey vs Floorball and team size

2-0, 3-1, 3-2 or 3-3 Drills / Practices

Make the above floorball practices to 2–0, 3-1, 3-2 or 3–3. This is a description of how to change basic practices described in yesterdays post.

2 vs 0 floorball drill, option 1

Make the floorball drill to the left to a 2 vs 0 practice by removing the defensemen from the drill. In that case P2 receives the pass and moves in front of the goal to take a shot, or why not practice a Zorro-move when coming from behind the goal.

3 vs. 1 floorball drill, option 2

Make the floorball practice 3 vs 1 by adding a defensemen who follows P1, P2 or passively disturbs the defensemen.

3 vs 2 floorball drill, option 3

Make the floorball practice 3 vs 2 by adding two defensemen who follows P1 and P2

3 vs 3 floorball practice, option 4

You can also make the floorball drill to a 3 vs 3 drill by adding defensemen who follows each offensive player (including the defensemen). You can say that in that case you have three 1 on 1 situations where you need to beat the opponent in order to be successful. The defensive players can be passive in the beginning, just marking their presence.

3 vs 3 floorball practice, option 5

3 vs 3 can also be done like this. Make the first moves like in the floorball drill drawing. When the defensemen receives the pass three defensemen step in to the practice and they play 3 on 3 until the “ball is dead”, by that I mean the ball is in goal, the goalie has the ball or the defensemen has passed the ball to “P1” the next in line to start up the drill.

Floorball game drills and offensive practices

Offensive floorball practices and drills – to the left

The floorball practice to the left starts with player 1 running with the ball towards the short end. P2 runs to the short on the other side of the goal. P1 passes the ball to P2, who turns around with the ball and passes on the ball to the defensemen. The defensemen takes a couple of steps with the ball and shoots. P1 and P2 goes for the area in front of the posts for rebounds.

Floorball practice /drill to the right

The floorball drill to the right follows the same pattern as the practice above or to the left. The difference is in that the defensemen does not take the shot, but he/she makes a diagonal pass to P1 instead, who takes the shot. After the pass D1 takes a new ball and takes a shot from distance. P1 and P2 in front of the goal, to make mask for the goalie and to pick up possible rebounds.

Change this floorball drill to 3-0, 2-0, 3-1, 3-2 or 3-3 practice

I will describe how you can change this drill to a 3-0, 2-0, 3-1, 3-2 or 3-3 practice in the next post in this floorball blog, welcome back tomorrow…

Floorball set up / system 2-2-1, 1-2-2, 1-3-1 and 2-1-2

Floorball game systems and set ups like 2-2-1, 1-2-2, 1-3-1 and 2-1-2 are basically only visible when the floorball team has lost the ball and changed from attack to defense, or are just changing from defense to attack, that will say in a fast counter attack in a floorball game.

1-2-2 in Floorball

I will add a few examples of the different constellations and floorball set ups, such as 2-2-1, 1-2-2, 1-3-1 and 2-1-2. The set ups can be played in many ways, for example, offensive, defensive, and right or the left-weighted.

2-1-2 in Floorball

Systems can also vary depending on the floorball team, coaches, players, and their given roles, so for example 2-2-1 found on this page does not need to be the same as how all floorball teams and coaches will play 2-2-1, these are just my examples.

Images are marked with green areas, the plan is to win the ball primary in that area. Red areas represent dangerous or game system / design / set up weaknesses.

So far I have not added either text or a description for the set ups, but I’ll do it over
time, so please return to the page, I will also add various openings / break outs in
floorball, or the small golden details which will help you break the different floorball
systems.
