Game Tactics Sweden

In the International Coaching Education, during the World Championships in Sweden, we had the opportunity to listen to the Swedish National Hockey team coach, before each game.

“We want to play with full control (puck / ball possession) towards the offensive zone, and in the “zone” we try to go straight towards the goal, P1 goes in front of the goal and P2 seeks up the rebound area. We also try to stay in the way of the goalie and steer the shots. Other areas we focus on, are to “win the inside” in 1-1 situations. You can say that, the more skilled players you have the less we talk about how, it’s more about what.”

Floorball – Trust in your team

So, what happens to you if despite all of your planning and following of these rules, injury still strikes? Well, make sure your floorball player gets proper medical attention for sure, and never put an injured floorball player back in the game just because he says that he’s healthy… highly motivated floorball players want to play every floorball game.

Waiting time at floorball practice before a drill

Trust in the rest of your floorball team to fill the spot. After all, if you’ve followed the above plan all year long, your floorball team will be well conditioned, warmed-up, and will have had plenty of playing time to prepare for this moment. Slap them on the back and tell them to “go give it their all!”

Keep your players fit during the floorball season

Proper rest is vital to continued good health, we all know this. So how come so many floorball coaches put their star player into the game and then keep him or her there throughout the entire game, and then into any overtime that might be required? Pace your players, substitute them liberally and tactically, especially in early season floorball games.  Giving everyone a chance to play doesn’t just have to be a touchy-feely idea, smart floorball coaches preserve their forces for later battles!

Floorball – Specific goals create energy and persistence over time

What’s measured gets done, clear goals will also increase the effort to reach the goals within the floorball team. Your goals will also guide you as floorball coach in planning and prioritizing your activities for the team and of course the roadmap will be clearer when you know where you are heading.

Specific goals

Try to specify your goals as much as possible, because this will increase the effort and clarity of the goal. It will also be easier for you as the coach to evaluate the effort and give feedback if the goal is more specific. If you want to increase the ball possession, you could set a target to have at least ten successful passes from each player during a game, instead of saying, we need to increase the ball possession (or the worst case we should avoid losing ball).

Floorball skill practice drills

Use the goal setting for both floorball practices and games and try to write down the goals and visualize it for the team. This will secure that you have the same view of what’s measured and what’s needed to be done. If you are only discussing the goals, it will be possible that you don’t have the same picture or you or your players forget the goal and it can be interpreted in different directions by each player when the time goes by.

Common mistakes in goal setting

The goals are not…
– Followed up
– Visualized
– Specific
– Understood
– Few (too many goals will split up the energy and focus)

If your goals and vision is strong enough it will create energy and persistence over time.
