Floorball drills for 6 to 10 year old – 2 vs. 0, 1-1 and 2-1

6-10 vuotiaiden 2 vastaan 0 salibandyharjoite

A simple 2 vs 0 floorball practice for young / youth players (children).

The floorball practice to the left starts in a 1 vs 1 situation. Coach makes a short pass, which also is the start signal for the players. The players will compete to the ball and the player reaching it first, passes it back to the coach.
After that both players continue to the other side and go 2-0 towards the goalie. One of the players pick up the ball and run with it towards the short end, the other player without the ball runs towards the goal. The player with ball passes the ball to the player in front of the goalie, who shoots.

Floorball drill to the right

The floorball drill to the right is performed the same way as in the example to the left, except the coach passes the ball back to the players and they go 2-0 against the goalie.

Make the youth floorball drill 1-1 or 2-1

Both floorball practices can be changed into a 1 vs 1 floorball drill. Instead of passing each other, one of the players is attacking and the other one is defending.

You can also change the drill into a 2 vs 1 floorball practice by adding a defensive player that follows the first two players in the first sequence and is the defensemen in the last part of the drill.

Add more passes or change positions

Now the floorball drill is in a very simple and basic format, but you can also add more passes to the drill or make the players change positions when going towards the goal.

Floorball – Motivation to stay in the team

So far we have been talking about motivation to do something. What a bout the motivation to continue within the same team, stay in the group? Motivation to stay in the floorball team can be divided into two categories:
– Forces that attract team members to the team (task oriented, to win games tournaments)
– Resistance towards splitting up (force inside the team to continue as a team)

Zlatan Ibrahimovic left Inter for Barcelona in order to be able to win the Champions League. Inter with Jose Mourinho won Serie A, Coppa Italia and Champions League, the year Ibrahimovic left.
Mourinho left Inter for Real Madrid but, most of the Inter players stayed in the team, even if there were a lot of rumors about transfers, but not many of them showed up to be true in the end. The force to stay in the same team was stronger than the attraction of other teams, except for José Mourinho.

Floorball youth skill drills and practices

Research shows that a high turnover among players/employees is expensive, time consuming and affects the satisfaction and communication negatively among the players in the team.
When it comes to changing the coach it looks like the change is connected to negative results in case of continuous change of coaches.

“The magic triple we won with Mourinho, no one can take that away from us, and we have the same team as last year, so no one can say we can not do it again” /Javier Zanetti

Floorball warm up practice – Change positions

Floorball warm up practices – Change position up to the right (a)

P1 starts the floorball warm up practice, by running with the ball towards the border, P2 runs behind P1. P1 passes the ball to P2 who takes the shot, both players goes for the rebound.

Four Options to the floorball warm up practice – Shot, pass and 2 vs 1

1. P1 doesn’t pass, P1 shoots and P2 goes for the rebound.
2. P1 passes and P2 passes back P1 shoots. With this option the floorball goalie also gets good practice in moving from side to side or post to post.
3. Add a defensemen who starts in the middle or meets up the two forwards and you have a simple 2 on 1 floorball practice.
4. Start the floorball drill from the corner or from the border, from left or right.

Floorball vs. Hockey from a parents perspective Part 1

Hockey is expensive and floorball is cheap and easy to start with? This is at least the most most used phrase in Sweden, but is it true?

Cost for Hockey vs Floorball equipment

Hockey costs in Sweden for 7-8 year old players, close to Stockholm;

– 10€ training fee (50€ second year)
– 40€ Skates
– 25€ Shin guards
– 15€ Socks
– 50€ Hockey pants
– 30€ Shoulder pads
– 15€ Elbow pads
– 15€ neck and throat guard
– 60€ Helmet with face protection
– 30€ Hockeystick

290€ to play hockey the first year.

Hockey vs Floorball and team size
Hockey players warming up before a practice game against a floorball team.

Floorball costs in Sweden for 7-8 year old players, close to Stockholm;

– 60€ in training fee (130€ after two years)
– 40€ Shoes
– 30 € Protective glasses
– 55€ Team tracksuit
– 25€ Team shorts and socks
– 20€ Team bag
– 50€ Floorball stick

280€ for playing floorball the first year.

The cost to start playing the first years are quite similar, hockey has the rumour of being expensive hanging over already from the beginning, but as a floorball parent you are forced to buy “team spirit strengthening” equipment from the beginning which increases the start up cost.

By buying used equipment and being careful with the items around the sport (tracksuits etc. this is directed towards the teams) you can keep the cost down in both sports and allow your children(s) to try and practice both?

Youth / Childrens Floorball Practices and Drills

Salibandyn mailatekniikka / harhautusharjoite oikealla

6-10 V. Pallonhallinta ja harhautus salibandyharjoite

In the youth or childrens floorball practice to the right the players are practicing ball control and stickhandling. Players make a couple of short moves before two long moves with the stick and the ball, and after that a shot in to the goal.

When the players have taken the shot, they pick up the ball again and practice feints on the way back. The feints they can practice, can be a passing feint, shot feint or a body feint to start up with some basic dekes.

Running four floorball practices at the same time

By splitting up the rink / floor in small parts you can have like in this example four floorball practices up and running at the same time. You can run both floorball practices in this drill drawing at one end and therefore have many active young floorball players at the same time.
