Have you heard about the Pareto 20/80 rule? 80% of your floorball results come from 20% of your activities, drills, practices etc. meaning a limited amount of activities will give you already 80% of the results!
What are your leadership cornerstones or vision? What about your floorball players key, or basic activities that will give you the 80% of results?
Find and visualize those important floorball activities, drills and practices that generates the majority of your results and get really good in doing those few things! Getting your basic box (framework) in place, it’s easier to do things outside the box. Master what’s inside the framework, that will give you the 80% of the results.

You will probably not find them, at least I haven’t, but this might give some advice that he is working with the 20/80 rule? These are some things that you can read about Mourinhos 36 football drills.

Combined floorball drills

The 36 football drills are simple or basic if you prefer that word, the practices are mainly designed to work with techniques and skills. During the practices and the drills the players work with fitness, tactical, technical factors at the same time with a high number of ball touches. Mourinho has also included the psychological and mental factors into the drills, meaning he is also working with the psychological part in football simultaneously.

Floorball is about 1 vs 1?

In a floorball game you have 5 players against 5 players, but if you look closer, you can apply the rule from mathematics “Lowest common denominator”, in that case you will always have 1 on 1 situations on the floorball floor.
If you are able to fool one player or support one player better than the other team, you will have a 2 on 1 situation and therefore an advantage, so why try to complicate the floorball practices and drills with for example, more than 3 on 3?

To challenge or to be challenged

Many times floorball coaches are talking about challenging another player or defensemen, but what does it mean? For me, to challenge, means a player with the ball needs to move towards a free space and get the defensive player to move there to take the challenge, if he/she doesn’t, you are past. If you go straight against the defensemen in his/her territory, you will get challenged, right?

In hockey, one of the teams in Sweden on elite level has created their own shooting center to improve the goal scoring and shooting skills… fully appliccable to floorball.

Most of the teams also have special practices for goalies, during the weeks or months, but this team also have special practices for goal scoring!

Floorball practice shooting drill

During this shooting or goal scoring practice, the rink is divided into two areas, one for the offensive players and one for the defensive players. Each zone has four drills running at the same time.

Forwards
1. Running in from the border “Shoot in the middle of the step”
2. Pass from one side, shoot directly at the other post
3. 2 vs. 0 – rebound – Shot from defensive player
4. Goalie freezed in right position, player tries to find the spots to score goal, by looking at the angle of the ball.

Defensive players
1. Pass vertically and a shot.
2. Pass from corner to a defensive player running towards the goal, shot.
3. Pass from the “pocket” (along the border), and shot.
4. A forward in front of the goal hold the stick up from the floor for shot on goal, or on the floor to make the defensive player to shoot for stearing the shot.

So, what if, we would put in as much effort as in training the goalies, to score goals and improve the shooting skills in floorball we would have really good goal scorers and snipers in floorball. Maybe we should also focus on goal scoring coaches / trainers?

Looking at goal scoring, shooting skills and practicing focus, you could say that much of the focus is today on, taking rebounds and creating a mask, traffic or wall in front of the goalie to reduce the visibility, when the shot comes.

Floorball practice and drills shot on goal

This will be important in future, but increased training focus will need to be on shooting skills and scoring goals, with different types of shooting techniques like:
– Wrist shot
– Snap shot
– “Slap shot”
– Backhand
– Shooting unannounced and in movement sideways
and to be able to shoot with the weight (centre of gravity) on both feets, left or right (the foot that is in front).

Floorball – Specific goals create energy and persistence over time

What’s measured gets done, clear goals will also increase the effort to reach the goals within the floorball team. Your goals will also guide you as floorball coach in planning and prioritizing your activities for the team and of course the roadmap will be clearer when you know where you are heading.

Specific goals

Try to specify your goals as much as possible, because this will increase the effort and clarity of the goal. It will also be easier for you as the coach to evaluate the effort and give feedback if the goal is more specific. If you want to increase the ball possession, you could set a target to have at least ten successful passes from each player during a game, instead of saying, we need to increase the ball possession (or the worst case we should avoid losing ball).

Floorball skill practice drills

Use the goal setting for both floorball practices and games and try to write down the goals and visualize it for the team. This will secure that you have the same view of what’s measured and what’s needed to be done. If you are only discussing the goals, it will be possible that you don’t have the same picture or you or your players forget the goal and it can be interpreted in different directions by each player when the time goes by.

Common mistakes in goal setting

– Visualized
– Specific
– Understood
– Few (too many goals will split up the energy and focus)

If your goals and vision is strong enough it will create energy and persistence over time.

Floorball Stickhandling and Ball control starting positions

Practice floorball stick handling from different postions. The pattern or boxes in the pictures can for example be taped on the floor. If the different positions are visual, then it’s also easier to practice the drills in different positions and the players will easier understand the advices and directions from the floorball coach. You can perform the stickhandling practices in front, diagonally in front, forehand / normally, and on backhand. The stickhandling drills will also work great as homework during the floorball off-season.

Floorball game drills 2 – 0 (left)

Floorball practice to the left is started up with P1 moving forward with the ball, turning into the centre. P2 runs towards the goal and receives a diagonal pass from P1. P2 shoots the ball into the goal and P1 goes for a possible rebound.

Option 1 to the 2-0 floorball practice

P2 continues his/her running to the other side/post, and creates space for P1 to move in to the other border, P1 takes a shot or passes the ball to P2, who then will put the ball in goal.

Option 2 make the floorball practice 2-1

Add a defensive player to the floorball drill who will join the situation from the right corner or start from the middle.

Option 3 make the floorball practice 2-2

Add two defensive players to the floorball practice, these will join the situation from the right corner and from the middle.

Option 4, develop 2 vs 2 floorball practice situation

Perform the floorball practice like in the basic set up. After the shot P1 and P2 will defend against two forwards coming from the right corner. Play 2-2 until the ball is dead, the ball is in goal, the goalie has it or the defensemen has passed the ball to P1 or P2 que.
