Ironman – Norway

As one of the steps to develop Norwegian hockey, and the physical status of the players, the “Ironman” competition was started.

All the players and teams are part of the Ironman competition, the players/team get points on their result in physical events, like 40 m sprint, 3000 m running, and different strength and jumping excercises.
If you or your team is not physically prepared for the upcoming season, it will be revealed here.

The Ironman event has put the physical practice in focus, as planned from the beginning, this is also a big thing for media.

The score in the different physical excercises, are categorized on four levels
1. Machine (Elite level)
2. Towards the Elite level
3. Should be improved
4. Hobby level

Practice floorball stick handling from different postions. The pattern or boxes in the pictures can for example be taped on the floor. If the different positions are visual, then it’s also easier to practice the drills in different positions and the players will easier understand the advices and directions from the floorball coach. You can perform the stickhandling practices in front, diagonally in front, forehand / normally, and on backhand. The stickhandling drills will also work great as homework during the floorball off-season.

This is an effective off season practice building up strength in legs to use in games during tight situations in floorball games.

Smart Youth Floorball Players

Smart and well trained floorball players are a floorball coaches best assets. Well-conditioned smart floorball players will beat less intelligent, yet bigger and stronger players almost every time! If a floorball coach trains the minds of his floorball players while he is drilling them, he will be rewarded in the long run.
The best time to engage your floorball players’ minds is when you are drilling their bodies. This goes like a hand in a glove with the idea of keeping your drills fun and challenging (a post couple of days ago)!

Multidimensional floorball practices and drills

Work on several things at once in your floorball drills (multidimensional practicing), but get the basics in place before adding more dimensions to the floorball drills.
While the assistant coaches are observing technique performance, a smart head coach will be drilling his floorball players minds, teaching them game situations, preparing them to think for themselves when the time comes. Never waste an opportunity to succeed, and make a point of never wasting time.

Why this floorball drill or practice?

Know why you are running the drill! You can use the leadership model on this page and apply it on your drills and practices (why, goal, how, result and feedback). Don’t just find some floorball drill in an old floorball coaching manual and decide that you can waste twenty minutes on it at the next practice. Locate floorball drills that will improve what your players have been doing poorly or strengthen even more what you are strong in. If your players are making poor tactical decisions during the floorball games, find floorball drills that will teach them to think about that specific game situation. There is no sense in running them through another floorball drill that teaches them something that they already know by heart.

Fun and Challenging Floorball Drills and Practices

Every floorball coach knows that successful floorball practices and drills involve a lot of teaching. Floorball players learn the proper techniques and skills through hours and hours of repeating the same movements, and yes, this can be boring, but should it be? Of course not, since drills and practices are the key to teaching and learning in any sport.

Good floorball coaches manage to minimize the boredom, and great floorball coaches make the most boring activity entertaining and engaging.

Multidimensional Floorball training

I try to start to build up a floorball drill from a very basic format, just to get the foundation in place, and when you see your floorball players manage the skills, you add a new part to the floorball drill, one extra player, forward or defensive player, an extra shot, or a pass. To keep the development and the challenge. Competition is also a good motivational factor for very many floorball players.

Mental training in Floorball

You can also add mental training into your floorball drills and practices, each time a defensive player goes out into the floorball drill he/she could have a mantra in his/her head repeated “I’m strong and I feel confident”, or something else that is building up them mentally, so when they manage the technical part of the floorball drill, you can add a mental part to develop and challenge your floorball players.

Eliminate waiting in Floorball Practices

Another thing you can use to keep your floorball drills fun and challenging is to eliminate the waiting time, waiting and standing is waste and boring for your floorball players, keep your players activated and focused! Focus on development – avoid status quo

Make your floorball drills fun and challenging! Don’t be stuck in status quo. This cannot be emphasized enough. It is also important that your floorball coaching staff is in place, during the floorball drills, and you have clear defined responsibilities and roles in the coaching team, making sure that your players are using the proper techniques and get the teaching they need for their development.

Make your players enjoy and look forward for the next floorball practice! You have their bodies, now work on getting their brains.

Floorball drills for 6 to 10 year old – 2 vs. 0, 1-1 and 2-1

A simple 2 vs 0 floorball practice for young / youth players (children).

The floorball practice to the left starts in a 1 vs 1 situation. Coach makes a short pass, which also is the start signal for the players. The players will compete to the ball and the player reaching it first, passes it back to the coach.
After that both players continue to the other side and go 2-0 towards the goalie. One of the players pick up the ball and run with it towards the short end, the other player without the ball runs towards the goal. The player with ball passes the ball to the player in front of the goalie, who shoots.

Floorball drill to the right

The floorball drill to the right is performed the same way as in the example to the left, except the coach passes the ball back to the players and they go 2-0 against the goalie.

Make the youth floorball drill 1-1 or 2-1

Both floorball practices can be changed into a 1 vs 1 floorball drill. Instead of passing each other, one of the players is attacking and the other one is defending.

You can also change the drill into a 2 vs 1 floorball practice by adding a defensive player that follows the first two players in the first sequence and is the defensemen in the last part of the drill.

Add more passes or change positions

Now the floorball drill is in a very simple and basic format, but you can also add more passes to the drill or make the players change positions when going towards the goal.

Floorball warm up practices – Change position up to the right (a)

P1 starts the floorball warm up practice, by running with the ball towards the border, P2 runs behind P1. P1 passes the ball to P2 who takes the shot, both players goes for the rebound.

Four Options to the floorball warm up practice – Shot, pass and 2 vs 1

1. P1 doesn’t pass, P1 shoots and P2 goes for the rebound.
2. P1 passes and P2 passes back P1 shoots. With this option the floorball goalie also gets good practice in moving from side to side or post to post.
3. Add a defensemen who starts in the middle or meets up the two forwards and you have a simple 2 on 1 floorball practice.
4. Start the floorball drill from the corner or from the border, from left or right.

2-0, 3-1, 3-2 or 3-3 Drills / Practices

Make the above floorball practices to 2–0, 3-1, 3-2 or 3–3. This is a description of how to change basic practices described in yesterdays post.

2 vs 0 floorball drill, option 1

Make the floorball drill to the left to a 2 vs 0 practice by removing the defensemen from the drill. In that case P2 receives the pass and moves in front of the goal to take a shot, or why not practice a Zorro-move when coming from behind the goal.

3 vs. 1 floorball drill, option 2

Make the floorball practice 3 vs 1 by adding a defensemen who follows P1, P2 or passively disturbs the defensemen.

3 vs 2 floorball drill, option 3

Make the floorball practice 3 vs 2 by adding two defensemen who follows P1 and P2

3 vs 3 floorball practice, option 4

You can also make the floorball drill to a 3 vs 3 drill by adding defensemen who follows each offensive player (including the defensemen). You can say that in that case you have three 1 on 1 situations where you need to beat the opponent in order to be successful. The defensive players can be passive in the beginning, just marking their presence.

3 vs 3 floorball practice, option 5

3 vs 3 can also be done like this. Make the first moves like in the floorball drill drawing. When the defensemen receives the pass three defensemen step in to the practice and they play 3 on 3 until the “ball is dead”, by that I mean the ball is in goal, the goalie has the ball or the defensemen has passed the ball to “P1” the next in line to start up the drill.

Offensive floorball practices and drills – to the left

The floorball practice to the left starts with player 1 running with the ball towards the short end. P2 runs to the short on the other side of the goal. P1 passes the ball to P2, who turns around with the ball and passes on the ball to the defensemen. The defensemen takes a couple of steps with the ball and shoots. P1 and P2 goes for the area in front of the posts for rebounds.

Floorball practice /drill to the right

The floorball drill to the right follows the same pattern as the practice above or to the left. The difference is in that the defensemen does not take the shot, but he/she makes a diagonal pass to P1 instead, who takes the shot. After the pass D1 takes a new ball and takes a shot from distance. P1 and P2 in front of the goal, to make mask for the goalie and to pick up possible rebounds.

Change this floorball drill to 3-0, 2-0, 3-1, 3-2 or 3-3 practice
