Floorball off-season practice and drill performed in pairs (1-1). The floorball off season drill is performed shoulder against shoulder and the players try to get over to the other players side while slowly moving forward. This is an effective off season practice building up strength in legs to use in games during tight situations in floorball games.
Floorball game drills 2 – 0 (left)
Floorball practice to the left is started up with P1 moving forward with the ball, turning into the centre. P2 runs towards the goal and receives a diagonal pass from P1. P2 shoots the ball into the goal and P1 goes for a possible rebound.
Option 1 to the 2-0 floorball practice
P2 continues his/her running to the other side/post, and creates space for P1 to move in to the other border, P1 takes a shot or passes the ball to P2, who then will put the ball in goal.
Option 2 make the floorball practice 2-1
Add a defensive player to the floorball drill who will join the situation from the right corner or start from the middle.
Option 3 make the floorball practice 2-2
Add two defensive players to the floorball practice, these will join the situation from the right corner and from the middle.
Option 4, develop 2 vs 2 floorball practice situation
Perform the floorball practice like in the basic set up. After the shot P1 and P2 will defend against two forwards coming from the right corner. Play 2-2 until the ball is dead, the ball is in goal, the goalie has it or the defensemen has passed the ball to P1 or P2 que.
If you assume that the floorball teams on certain level practice the same amount of practices each week, lets say four times, and you want to outcompete your opponents, you can choose to increase the amount of floorball practices or work on improving the quality of your floorball practices and drills, in order to “run away” from the other teams.
Let’s have an theoretical example, 4 (floorball practices) x 31 (weeks, length of the season) = 124 floorball practices during a season. Each practice contains 5 floorball drills, 5 X 124= 620 drills. Each floorball drill is repeated 5 times per player during the floorball practice, 5 X 620=3100 repetitions.
Instead of increasing the amount of floorball practices you could set up a goal that each player will run 3 meters extra every floorball drill, this would mean 3100 drills X 3 meters X 20 players = 186000 meters. Your team would with this small improvement run 186 kilometers extra during the floorball season, the result should be visible in the end of the games or at the end of the season, you would have physically and psychologically strong floorball players, they will take the extra steps needed for success. Instead of running, you could let your floorball players practice a feint while waiting. 10000 repetitions will automatize the move, 10000 hours will make you master of it!
The power of small steps
You can of course use the same principle for improvements in general or your work towards common goals. Let’s say you can do 3 small improvement steps each day, after a month you have 90 small improvement steps and after 6 months 540. If you can make each floorball player in your team to take these small improvement steps you will have 540 X 20 players = 10800 small improvements in your floorball team.
Floorball drill 3-0 (to the right)
Floorball practice to the right starts with P1 running with the ball, P1 passes the ball to P2 who passes it on to player 3. P3 shoots.
Option 1 to the Floorball practice 3-0 (to the right)
P1 passes the ball to player 3 who takes the shot.
Option 2 to the Floorball practice 3-0 (to the right)
P1 passes the ball to player 3 who takes the shot. P2 receives a pass from “P1 que”, P1 and P3 in front of the goalie, P2 takes a shot from the distance.
Floorball practice 3-1 (to the right) option 3
Add a defensive player from the corner or from the middle to create a 3-1 floorball drill.
Floorball practice 3-2 (to the right) option 4
Add a defensive player from the corner and one that follows P3 to create a 3-2 floorball practice.
Floorball practice 2-3 (to the right) option 5
Perform the floorball practice drill as in the basic format, when the first 3-0 situation is finished. The attacking players will play defense against two forwards that will come from the corners.
3-0 Floorball practice to the right
Player 1 starts the floorball practice by running with ball towards the defensemen, the defensemen moves to the border and receives a pass from P1. P1 heads for the area in front of the goal, meanwhile D1 passes the ball to P2 , P2 immediately passes the ball to P1, who will shoot the ball into goal.

The floorball practice drill is performed as in the basic set up, but you can add a defensive player from the other corner. D1 will not be part of the floorball drill after the pass, therefore the situation will be 2 vs 1 in front of the goal.
Make the floorball practice to the right a 2-2 drill
The floorball practice drill is performed as in the basic set up, but you will add a defensive player from the opposite corner and one defensive player following P1. D1 will not be part of the floorball drill after the pass, therefore the situation will be 2 vs 2 in front of the goal.
Make the floorball practice to the right a 3-1 drill
The floorball practice drill is performed as in the basic set up, but you will add a defensive player from the opposite corner. D1 is part of the floorball drill after the pass, therefore the situation will be 3 vs 1.
Make the floorball practice drill to the right a 3-2 situation
The floorball practice drill is performed as in the basic set up, but you will add a defensive player from the opposite corner and one defensive player following P1. D1 is part of the floorball drill after the pass, therefore the situation will be 3 vs 2.
3 vs 0 Floorball practice to left
In the floorball drill to the right P1 starts running with ball from the corner, P3 leaves his/her position in front of the goal, and meets P1. P1 continues his/her running behind the goal and passes the ball to P2. P2 runs with the ball towards the short end, P1 takes P2 position. P2 passes the ball to P3 who has returned back in front of the goal. P3 shoots the ball into the goal. P4 is not part of the drill if you practice it 3 vs 0.
Add a pass to the floorball drill
After a while you can add a pass in this drill, when P2 meet P1, P2 passes to P1, P1 passes to P3, P3 takes the shot on goal.
Change the 3-0 floorball practice
Or P1 does not pass the ball to P3, instead P1 turns around and takes the shot, P2 and P3 are in front of the goal to pick up rebounds.
4 vs 0 floorball practice to the left
You perform the floorball drill as described in the first step, but you add P4 as one option for the pass from P2, the shot will then come from P3 or P4.
Change the floorball drill to a 3-2, 4-2 or 4-3 situation
Add two or three defensemen to the floorball practice drill to get a 3-2, 4-2 or 4-3 situation. The defensemen will follow players 1, 2 and/or 3.
2 vs 0 floorball practice (left)
You can also make a 2-0 situation of this floorball practice. In that case you do the floorball drill as the drawing shows until the pass to P2. After P1 has made the pass he/she turn around and goes behind the goal the sam way he/she has come, P2 passes the ball to P1 in front of the goal. P1 shoots the ball into the net. If you do the practice this way P3 and P4 are not included at all in the floorball practice.
Smart and well trained floorball players are a floorball coaches best assets. Well-conditioned smart floorball players will beat less intelligent, yet bigger and stronger players almost every time! If a floorball coach trains the minds of his floorball players while he is drilling them, he will be rewarded in the long run.
The best time to engage your floorball players’ minds is when you are drilling their bodies. This goes like a hand in a glove with the idea of keeping your drills fun and challenging (a post couple of days ago)!
Multidimensional floorball practices and drills
Work on several things at once in your floorball drills (multidimensional practicing), but get the basics in place before adding more dimensions to the floorball drills.
While the assistant coaches are observing technique performance, a smart head coach will be drilling his floorball players minds, teaching them game situations, preparing them to think for themselves when the time comes. Never waste an opportunity to succeed, and make a point of never wasting time.
Why this floorball drill or practice?
Know why you are running the drill! You can use the leadership model on this page and apply it on your drills and practices (why, goal, how, result and feedback). Don’t just find some floorball drill in an old floorball coaching manual and decide that you can waste twenty minutes on it at the next practice. Locate floorball drills that will improve what your players have been doing poorly or strengthen even more what you are strong in. If your players are making poor tactical decisions during the floorball games, find floorball drills that will teach them to think about that specific game situation. There is no sense in running them through another floorball drill that teaches them something that they already know by heart.

This is a combined floorball practice drill, where P1 starts from the border and takes a shot, after that he/she works with defense, running backwards in middle and finally checks / steers the imagined breakout towards the other border. This pattern can be used if you are playing with 2-2-1 or for example 1-3-1 set up.

Make the floorball drill to 1 on 1 practice by using P1 as passive defensive player against P2. P1 will only mark his/her presence and let P2 pass to make a shot.
Every floorball coach knows that successful floorball practices and drills involve a lot of teaching. Floorball players learn the proper techniques and skills through hours and hours of repeating the same movements, and yes, this can be boring, but should it be? Of course not, since drills and practices are the key to teaching and learning in any sport.
Good floorball coaches manage to minimize the boredom, and great floorball coaches make the most boring activity entertaining and engaging.
Multidimensional Floorball training
I try to start to build up a floorball drill from a very basic format, just to get the foundation in place, and when you see your floorball players manage the skills, you add a new part to the floorball drill, one extra player, forward or defensive player, an extra shot, or a pass. To keep the development and the challenge. Competition is also a good motivational factor for very many floorball players.
Mental training in Floorball
You can also add mental training into your floorball drills and practices, each time a defensive player goes out into the floorball drill he/she could have a mantra in his/her head repeated “I’m strong and I feel confident”, or something else that is building up them mentally, so when they manage the technical part of the floorball drill, you can add a mental part to develop and challenge your floorball players.
Eliminate waiting in Floorball Practices
Another thing you can use to keep your floorball drills fun and challenging is to eliminate the waiting time, waiting and standing is waste and boring for your floorball players, keep your players activated and focused! While they are waiting to perform the floorball drill, they can work with stick/ball handling and ball controling drills.
Focus on development – avoid status quo
Make your floorball drills fun and challenging! Don’t be stuck in status quo. This cannot be emphasized enough. It is also important that your floorball coaching staff is in place, during the floorball drills, and you have clear defined responsibilities and roles in the coaching team, making sure that your players are using the proper techniques and get the teaching they need for their development.
